Play selfish defense?

When you’re playing man-to-man, be selfish. How? Follow these steps:

  1. Go out with the goal that your man is not going to score. Keep track of their points not your own.

  2. If your man scores, you’re not playing hard enough. Double down and play defense even harder the next time down the floor.

  3. If your man scores again, it’s probably time to start denying them the ball. Maybe it’s just a tough matchup or a really good scorer, if that’s the case, you gotta just deny them the ball. They can’t score on you if they never get the ball. Spend your energy on defense making it nearly impossible for your man to get the ball.

  4. Finally, be selfish by remembering help defense. Want some good defensive stats? Be ready to help when a teammate gets burned. Move your feet and cut off the drive. You’re much more likely to get a steal as a help defender or coming on a double team than isolation guarding. Pad your defensive stats by getting steals on help defense. Deny your man the ball so that he doesn’t shoot, and then go get the rebound. Be selfish and get steals and rebounds by playing defense as hard as you possibly can.
